WINEMAKER NOTES

Most people are surprised to learn that DNA analysis of Cabernet Franc has told us it is one of the parents for Cabernet Sauvignon (Sauvignon Blanc is the other).  Cabernet Franc was originally planted in the Loire Valley of Bordeaux, most likely hundreds of years ago.  Today, it is grown in a variety of other Bordeaux sub-regions such as the Chinon, Pomerol and St-Emillon.  Known to be slightly herbaceous in its purest form, it can often have a slight bell pepper aroma and can age beautifully for decades.

During blending trails of the 2022 Cab Franc in the spring of 2024, I found that a small percentage of Malbec (9%) gave the otherwise classic Franc profile a touch of dark fruit and softness.  On the nose I find classic Franc aromas of savory green olive, pepper and dark fruits.  On the palate, pomegranate, currants and raspberry are followed by a classic Franc herbal note.  I find this wine to have a long finish with a balance of tannins and acidity.

Bottled aged for over one year before being released (bottling aging is critical in my opinion), this wine is now coming into its own as tannins are maturing and the natural fruit of the variety are coming forward.
