2023 Sauvignon Blanc
Seven vintages of making Sauvignon Blanc in the Marlborough region of New Zealand solidified my love for this variety. I have always enjoyed the Sauvignon Blancs from the Sancerre region of France too, but there was something about the brightness of New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs that truly peaked my interest. The two wines are, in general, made differently in each region. Sauv Blanc in France is picked later and often fermented in neutral oak barrels. In New Zealand it is picked early and fermented in stainless tank. Both are lovely. The 2021 is a blend of both styles.
Tasting notes
Grassy, lychee, and tulsi basil on the nose. Hints of star fruit and pumelo usher in a lush texture and fresh acidity rendering this wine crisp and dry.
Production notes
Our 2019 Sauvignon Blanc was picked early, when there was still wonderful acidity and then fermented in neutral oak barrels. After fermentation, the wine was aged in barrel and on the lees for 7 months. This added aging on the lees helped to build texture and viscosity, which I feel adds complexity with the bright acidity from picking early.
